Portugal takes interest in Ryder Cup 2022
Portugal was one of seven countries that expressed the intention to host the 2022 edition of the Ryder Cup, one of the most important golf tournaments in the world which confronts, every four years, teams from Europe and the United States. Besides Portugal, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy and Turkey are on this list. British Richard Hills, Ryder Cup Europe (responsible for the applications and organization of the editions held in Europe every four years) Director, proved to be "delighted with the level of interest throughout Europe. We received each of the seven intention letters through their national federations, as mandatory by the application regulation."
Miguel Franco de Sousa, secretary-general of Federação Portuguesa de Golfe (FPG), explained that, currently, it is only a statement of intent. "The European Tour has invited all countries that have players eligible to represent the European team in the Ryder Cup to submit an intention to bid for the 2022 event. This intention has no ties. It serves only the purpose of receiving the dossier with the requirements for official announcement of candidacy, being the FPG able to withdraw from the process at any time, if it considers that Portugal is unable to submit a competitive bid", highlighted Franco de Sousa.
The seven interested countries will receive an application pack which will have to be formalized until 16th February 2015. The winner will be announced in late 2015. Portugal has already applied to the 2018 edition, having lost to France the organization of one of the world events with most media coverage. "FPG is aware that the moment the country is facing requires caution, but we can not stop investing in strategic areas and this is an excellent opportunity for Portugal to assume itself as a leading golf destination in the world", said Michael Franco de Sousa in a statement.
