Turismo de Portugal believes that the eight new Michelin stars reinforce Portugal's status as a gastronomic destination.
The Michelin Guide's 2025 selection dedicated to Portugal, which awarded eight new Michelin stars and one new green star, “has a direct impact on the recognition, international value and importance of gastronomy as a tourist asset and on the creation of wealth for the regions and the national economy,” Turismo de Portugal said in a statement.
Portugal now has a total of 46 Michelin-starred restaurants (38 with one star and eight with two stars). The Michelin selection includes a further 35 recommended restaurants and five new Bib Gourmand restaurants, corresponding to a total of 144 establishments.
With these achievements, “Portuguese gastronomy has been standing out for its authenticity, creativity and quality, which allows for a diverse and unique experience, whether in a tavern, a traditional restaurant or haute cuisine”.
Carlos Abade, president of Turismo de Portugal, underlines “the strategic importance of gastronomy for national tourism” and recalls that “Turismo de Portugal has invested in the enhancement and promotion of our gastronomy, whether in training professionals, supporting entrepreneurs to create and upgrade their establishments or promoting the country as a gastronomic destination of excellence, which includes the Michelin Guide Portugal, which gives prestige to the country”.
For Turismo de Portugal, these distinctions “have a direct impact on the restaurants that are part of the Guide's selection, but also on the entire universe of national restaurants and the value chain of our gastronomy, including the territories, local producers and products, the textile industry, ceramics, among other sectors, in addition to representing a strong boost in the internationalization of national gastronomy, contributing to Portugal's competitiveness as a tourist destination.”
